Thank You, School Counselors!
National School Counselor Week, February 6-11, is set aside to recognize the critical work counselors perform that positively impacts Arizona students. Counselors help students examine their personal strengths, abilities, interests and talents. Students who understand how to plan for their future make better course choices related to their educational and career goals, are more motivated to achieve better grades and take greater responsibility for directing their own educational achievement. Counselors are the connecting link between students, parents, teachers and the school system.
Annual Parent Survey
Scottsdale Unified School District parents are encouraged to provide input about our schools in the online Annual Parent Survey. The electronic survey will be available beginning Friday, January 20 through February 10. Parents are invited to complete the survey once for each student enrolled. Parents who do not have Internet access may use the school’s computer lab. Access the survey from the District Web site or your child’s school Web site beginning January 20. Your responses will help us make SUSD even better!

Traditional School Philosophy and Curriculum
Hohokam Traditional School is committed to academic excellence and believes that it starts with a partnership between home and school. The traditional philosophy is based around a structured learning environment and a solid foundation of fundamental and higher level thinking skills for students. This is accomplished with high behavior expectations and a curriculum that is consistent within each grade level and sequential throughout the grades. The curriculum is presented using direct teaching techniques along with specific differentiation to meet the needs of each individual child. We have placed a strong focus on phonics and vocabulary word study in the Houghton Mifflin language arts curriculum and our math adoption is Saxon. Art, music, P.E., library, and band/strings (4th-6th) are also included in the base curriculum.
At Hohokam we follow traditional philosophies, but also understand the importance of 21st Century technology and we embrace it. There are two computer labs, classroom computers, and a large selection of student laptops. Classrooms are also equipped with a SMART board, document camera, and audio system. In addition, students have access to a variety of educational software and online learning opportunities.

"Parents as Partners"
At Hohokam Traditional, we believe that parental involvement is crucial to the success of our students. Last year, we instituted a "Parents as Partners" program. When parents attend various school activities, they are given a "ticket" to place in the drawing. Each quarter, there will be one lucky family who will win a computer!
The winner for the 2nd quarter is Danielle Martinez, mother of Joel, from Mrs. Valencia's kindergarten.
